Guenther Ruhe


Dr. Ruhe received a doctorate rer. nat degree in Mathematics with emphasis on Operations Research from Freiberg University, Germany and a doctorate habil. nat. degree from both the Technical University of Leipzig and University of Kaiserslautern. He had a visiting professorship at University of Bayreuth in 1991/92. Ruhe was visiting scientist at the IBM Research Centre in Heidelberg in 1993. From 1996 until 2001 he was deputy director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering Fh IESE, Germany.

Guenther holds an Industrial Research Chair in Software Engineering at The University of Calgary. This is a joint position between the Department of Computer Science and Department of Electrical and Software Engineering. Dr. Ruhe is proud to lead a research team whose primary aim is to establish and demonstrate scientific excellence in the area of Software Engineering Decision Support (SEDS) and to collaborate with industry. Ruhe owns the US patent 8,006,222 on software release planning. He won various awards such as the Alberta iCORE (Informatics Center of Research Excellence) award, an IBM research award, a Mobility Award for foreign researchers at University of Bolzano, and a Microsoft Research Software Engineering Innovation award in 2012. Ruhe was in chairing positions for various conferences such as ESEM, RE, SEKE, and SSBSE. He was a Visiting Professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute for Software, Beijing. Since 2016, he serves as the Editor in Chief of the journal of Information and Software Technology, published by Elsevier.


His main research interests are in the areas of Product Release Planning, Software Project Management, Decision Support, Open Innovation, Data Analytics, Empirical Software Engineering as well as Search-based Software Engineering. He is a Senior member of IEEE and a member of the ACM. Dr. Ruhe is the Founder and CEO of Expert Decisions Inc., a University of Calgary spin-off company created in 2003.
